Billy A. Benavidez, 45, died Sunday, March 10, 2002 in Loma Linda. Born Jan. 17, 1957 in Barstow, Benavidez was a lifelong Barstow resident. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1976, where he ran track and field and played football. As a linebacker he was ruthless on the field and made Golden League All-League Linebacker. With his wife, he was also a general helper for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls for four years and while they were in high school. Benavidez worked for 14 years at the United States Marine Corps Logistics Base Yermo Annex as an optical instrument repairman and at Fort Irwin for 10 years. He also worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at both places. He was a retired sergeant from the California National Guard after a 22-year career. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for nine years and was a past trustee and general helper there. Benavidez loved to deep sea fish, and he enjoyed fixing things, from engines to a lighter for a friend. His helpfulness and generosity toward everyone were appreciated by all who knew him. Benavidez is survived by his wife of 24 years Bonnie Benavidez; his son Billy Benavidez; his daughter Brenda Benavidez; his parents Arturo and Corina Benavidez; his sister Yolanda Carbajal; his brothers George Benavidez, Joe Raymond Benavidez, and Bobby Benavidez all of Barstow; his brother Fidel Benavidez of Victorville; his mother-in-law Charlotte Ratliff of Dayton, Nev.; his sisters-in-law Olga Benavidez, Cecilia Benavidez, Rosita Benavidez, and Gina Benavidez all of Barstow; His brothers-in-law Jeff Nash of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Willie Cabajal of Barstow; his sisters-in-law Karen Benavidez of Victorville and Loralynn Nash of Colorado Springs, Colo. and a host of nieces and nephews.
